Logs for the Fire – 2006
There is a certain solitary feel to Logs for the Fire, my third album, most of which was composed when I lived in Rome, the title track evolving while thinking about nights sitting around the fire at home. The winter solitude seems to fit the overall mood of the compositions. Christmas is a nostalgic time for many, all the more when spent away from home in a foreign land.
The different Italian references reflect this mood, coupled with an eastern ambience, which seems an unconscious thread through my music. I think I also must attribute the style of some of my output to a strong John Lennon influence which has lasted over the years.
Some of the tracks here are buoyant and joyful - Snowride and En Passant , while others like Sempre Sola and Magari reflect a more pensive and contemplative mood. The music recalls the feelings of spending “Christmas away from home” around Piazza Navona – my working title at the time for the final track.
Those who know Rome and have visited there during this season, may know the feeling conjured up by walking into this piazza from the main busy thoroughfare. It possesses a certain tranquil magic, a world within a world, yet removed, also a place for artists, musicians, entertainers, lovers and those who simply enjoy being idle bystanders observing and absorbing all that is happening around them.
