Leaves of Change – 2003
Programme Note
Leaves of Change is the second album in a series of planned albums. It is a collection of reflective music that takes one through the seasons of the year with shades of Latin, Medieval and Oriental moods inter-woven with traditional celtic themes. The album opens with the Mediterraneum-styled ‘Farfillina’ (Little Butterfly) which introduces the freshness of spring, moving all the way through the year until the final track ‘Bebhinn/Rothai an tSaoil (Wheels of Life) which evokes the quiet mood at the close of the year. The new arrangement of ‘The Long Winter’ is a reprise from ‘The Celtic Drift’.
Three tracks are dedicated to my nieces Caoimhe, Aimee and Bebhinn, all of whom are in the early springtime of their lives. Others received their inspiration from Francis and Clare of Assisi, such as ‘La Verna’ and ‘The Grain O’ Wheat’.
On the ‘The Grain O’ Wheat’ we hear the playing of Tanya Christina Holst, a young German traditional musician, who came to Ireland to learn our music culture, mastering her chosen instruments extremely well. Tanya is picture here as we fondly remember her – the smiling, cheerful, talented young woman whom we still miss. We have dedicated this track to Tanya as ‘Song for Tanya’. We also remember Tanya Holst, who died so tragically 23 Oct 2001 in Dublin traffic. Tanya played pipes, flute and whistle on ‘The Grain of Wheat’ which we’ve now named ‘Song for Tanya’.
I also wish to thank the following musicians who joined me on this album: Liam Duggan: Uilleann Pipes, Cathal Duddy: Fiddle, Joe Foley who made a new instrument for me – a hybrid union of a guitar body and a bouzouki neck, which we christened the ‘Guitzouki’!. Thanks to Kyran, the producer of this album.
